When we travel to different towns in the Blue Ridge Mountains we always take the opportunity to visit art galleries.  We love seeing how our fellow artists display their work within their own communities.  While visiting Abingdon, VA to check out how their community was preserving their railroad heritage we also discovered another wonderful surprise!  the old depot in Abingdon was being used to support their artists!  The best of both possible worlds for us!

The Arts Depot has been going strong for 27 years.  What an accomplishment!  They are housed in the original historic depot in Abingdon that was built in 1866.  The town of Abingdon owns the depot and rents it to the association for a nominal annual fee.  The town maintains the outside of the building and grounds and The Arts Depot Association maintains the inside renovations and improvements.  How wonderful when a town recognizes the importance of the arts to their community!  The Arts Depot is the home to seven resident artists who not only display their work but show off the skills.  It is wonderful to see a working gallery.  Check out Helen M. Morgan working in her Fiber Studio.  We so enjoyed watching her work and discussing the many beautiful items she creates.

The Arts Depot Association is 242 members strong and had over 9000 visits last year.  They publish a newsletter, offer workshops and classes, and exhibits of local and regional artists throughout the year.  They also host festivals and music events, offer meeting places for painters, writers groups and the Washington County arts annual meeting.  They also offer a consignment gallery and more than 68 artists have placed over 850 pieces for sale.

It is a warm and welcoming space filled with creative energy!  We felt inspired just visiting and talking with the artists at work.  Our thanks go out to Nancy Garretson, one of the resident artists and founding members of The Artists Depot Association, for spending time talking with us.  Her enthusiasm and love for what they have accomplished over the years comes through loud and clear.  Kudos to the entire Arts Depot Association and all their artists!  Be sure to stop by an enjoy the experience for yourself next time you visit Abingdon VA.
